EE for schools and villages along the ‘East Coast Road’ (The ECR)
CrocBank focuses on the 20 village schools along the ECR and various activities like show and tell with reptiles, tree planting, sea turtle mobile exhibitions, day camps, quizzes, slide shows, painting competition and habitat awareness programs are conducted to sensitize the children to their backyard natural surroundings.
Sea turtle mobile exhibitions are conducted in schools and in coastal villages, along a 23 km stretch north and south of the CrocBank. Talks and exhibitions are conducted in 20 fishing villages during the nesting season between November-April each year. The mobile exhibition includes a puppet show on the marine turtles of India, stressing the need for their conservation and protection by fishing communities. The program continues with the photo exhibition on the plight of the olive ridley, Lepidochelya olivacea, in India, citing Orissa’s 'aribadas' and the ECR as an example on how fisheries and trawling methods cause large scale turtle mortality and habitat destruction impacting sea turtle nesting. The program concludes with a turtle walk along the villages and as a result, children and adults from these villages report nesting, nests, dead turtles and turtle sightings. Turtle walks are also conducted for ‘Friends of the CrocBank’, the general public, students and the media to increase awareness and the urgent need for protection and conservation of marine turtles.
Activities for the children of ‘Vadanemelli’ - The CrocBank Village
Over 25 children in the age group of eight to 14 from our village come to the CrocBank every Sunday morning, during summer and other holidays and are involved in various activities that are organized for them. Environment education being the main focus is conducted with a host of creative activities involving resource personnel like artists, musicians, potters, theater people and dancers. Painting workshops with natural materials, theatre training, puppet making, handling and performing, folk dance, terracotta workshops, craft from coconut shells, folk and traditional music and use of musical instruments are some of the ongoing continued activities and skills that are being imparted to these children.
CrocBank Puppet theatre
Puppetry, a traditional art in India is rapidly dying out; CrocBank launched a puppet theatre for the purpose of reviving this dying art form in rural areas and as an EE tool for environmental awareness programs. Village youth and children have been trained in the art of puppetry and puppet making and now manage and conduct shows regularly on weekends for the visiting public, schools and other groups that visit the CrocBank. Puppet theatre workshops are regularly conducted for other village children and children from the city who participate in nature camps and awareness programs conducted at the CrocBank.
Environment Education in City Schools
‘Show and tell’ with live reptiles is an ongoing activity for numerous schools in the city. The CrocBank also offers comprehensive modules on environment education for these schools. Using these modules children are taught various concepts related to the environment.
